Recruited from Box Hill, Wal Williams was a local product from Scoresby who earned his place on Hawthorn's list for the club's inaugural VFL season in 1925. A forward who could find the goals, he missed selection for the Mayblooms' historic first match but made his debut the following week against Collingwood. His rookie campaign came to an abrupt and controversial end after just four games, when he was suspended for the remainder of the year for abusing an umpire. Williams returned to become a regular fixture in the senior side throughout 1926, but after managing only one appearance early in the 1927 season, he was dropped from the team and finished his brief VFL career with 17 games.
