Bio
Recruited from VFA club Preston, Wally Gray was a local product who found his path to senior football blocked by Richmond's formidable depth during their early 1930s premiership era. Despite featuring in the Tigers' 1929 Reserves premiership side, he managed only three senior appearances before a mid-season clearance to Fitzroy in 1932 revitalised his career. Gray quickly established himself at Brunswick Street as a dashing back pocket who offered utility value, capable of rotating through the follower division as a ruck-rover despite his smaller stature. Renowned for his precise kicking and ability to read the play from defence, he became a week-in, week-out contributor for the Maroons, transforming from a fringe player at Punt Road into a reliable 90-game League footballer.
