Bio
Born in Footscray and living just streets away from the Lake Oval in South Melbourne, Wally Laidlaw was a local recruit whose brief VFL tenure was bookended by the Great War. After breaking into the Bloods' senior side for two games late in the 1914 season, his football ambitions were effectively paused when he enlisted in the AIF in March 1915. Laidlaw served with distinction in the 24th Battalion and later the 6th Field Artillery Brigade, eventually earning a Mention in Despatches for his conduct in France. He returned to Australia in early 1919 and pulled on the red and white guernsey for one final appearance that season, leaving the game as a player defined more by his service to the nation than his output on the field.
