Bio
The nephew of legendary Melbourne timekeeper Wally "Father Time" Spry, Wally Spry carried a famous football name but carved out his own brief career on the field rather than behind the glass. He arrived at North Melbourne in 1930, stationed in the backline where he operated as a half-back. Opportunities proved scarce for the defender at Arden Street, and he battled to cement a regular spot in the senior side, managing just nine games across two seasons. Seeking a fresh start and perhaps drawn by his family connection, Spry crossed to Melbourne for the 1932 pre-season but was unable to break into the Fuschias' senior lineup. He later moved to South Melbourne where he played in the reserves, finishing his time in the VFL system as a defensive journeyman who had a short taste of top-level football.
