Recruited from Mooroolbark, Warren McKenzie was a versatile key-position utility who carved out a niche as a reliable "swingman" during Carlton's powerful 1980s era. Capable of playing as a tall defender or a marking forward, he broke into the senior side in 1985 and became a valuable structural piece for the Blues, famously featuring on the interchange bench during the club’s 1987 premiership victory over Hawthorn. However, his momentum was stalled shortly after the flag triumph when a significant knee injury interrupted his 1988 campaign. Seeking more opportunities and a fresh start, McKenzie was central to a high-profile trade following the 1990 season, where the Sydney Swans—desperate for mature bodies—swapped the second overall draft pick to secure his services. He played two seasons in the Harbour City, providing experienced cover for a struggling Swans outfit, before eventually finishing his career in the VFA with Sandringham.
