Honours

A classic rover with a low centre of gravity and exceptional ball-handling skills, Warwick Irwin became a cult figure at Fitzroy after debuting in 1970. Known affectionately as "The Squeaker," he possessed a sharp goal sense and the ability to win the hard ball in heavy traffic, establishing himself as one of the premier small men of the competition throughout the decade. His consistency and skill were rewarded with state selection for Victoria and a club best and fairest, serving as a creative spark in a Lions outfit that often relied on individual brilliance.

In a move that surprised the football world, Irwin transferred to Collingwood for the 1981 season following a contract dispute. The stint at Victoria Park proved short-lived and largely unsuccessful; unable to settle into the Magpies' system, he played just 16 games before negotiating a return to Fitzroy the following year. He played out the final two seasons of his career back at the Junction Oval, retiring as a beloved figure among the Lions faithful. His contribution to the club was later immortalised with his selection in the Fitzroy Team of the Century.
