Recruited from VFA club Prahran, Wayne Johnston arrived at Carlton in 1979 and rapidly became the driving force behind the club's dominance throughout the 1980s. Known universally as "The Dominator," he was a dynamic left-footer who combined supreme fitness with a ferocious attack on the ball, allowing him to operate effectively as both a damaging midfielder and a dangerous half-forward. Johnston was widely viewed as the team's barometer; when he was firing, the Blues were rarely beaten. His aggressive style and ability to perform under pressure made him a nightmare matchup for opponents, often breaking lines with his run and carry before finishing accurately near goal.

A four-time premiership player, Johnston's legacy is defined by his reputation as a finals specialist who saved his best performances for September. He claimed two best and fairest awards in arguably the club's strongest ever squads and served as captain for two seasons, though his leadership was evident regardless of title. His ability to impose his will on a contest ensured his status as a Carlton icon, and he remained a pivotal figure at Princes Park until his retirement in 1990, eventually being inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
