Bio
Recruited from Brunswick in the VFA, Wayne Schimmelbusch immediately established himself as a cornerstone of North Melbourne's golden era in the 1970s. Debuting in 1973, he quickly endeared himself to the Arden Street faithful with a combination of high skill and fierce determination. While his brother Darryl also played for the club, Wayne carved out a unique identity as "Schimma," a rover and half-forward flanker who could win his own ball in the contest and finish clinically around goals.
Schimmelbusch was defined by his immense courage and durability. He was a pivotal member of the breakthrough 1975 premiership side, famously recovering from a heavy knock early in the Grand Final to contribute to the win, and played a crucial role in the 1977 flag victory. His playing style was characterised by a distinct running gait and an ability to accumulate possessions while consistently hitting the scoreboard. This reliability saw him become the first Kangaroo to reach the 300-game milestone, setting a longevity record for the club that stood for many years.
