Bio
Recruited from Essex Heights, Wayne Shand was a versatile utility capable of playing effectively as a half-back or half-forward flanker. Noted for his strong overhead marking and precise kicking, he faced the difficult task of breaking into a formidable Richmond lineup that reached the 1982 Grand Final during his debut season. While he possessed the skills to compete at the senior level, his career was severely hampered by persistent knee injuries that prevented him from stringing together consistent appearances at Punt Road. Seeking a fresh start, Shand moved to the Western Bulldogs for the 1985 season, but his injury troubles continued, restricting him to reserve grade football. Unable to overcome his physical setbacks, he was forced into premature retirement at the age of 27, leaving the game as a talented player whose body unfortunately let him down.
