Bio
Wes McGaw was the definition of a patient clubman, serving a remarkably long apprenticeship at Victoria Park before finally earning his senior guernsey. Recruited from local northern suburbs club Regent, he spent five seasons working his way through the Collingwood under-19s and reserves, where he developed a reputation as a wiry, skilful utility with genuine pace and an eye for goal. Despite finishing runner-up in the thirds' best-and-fairest and compiling nearly 60 reserves games, the formidable depth of the Magpies’ squad kept him on the fringe until he finally broke through for four games late in the 1972 season. Unable to cement a permanent spot, he crossed to the VFA to play with Preston and later Doveton, while working at the local Sherrin factory stitching footballs. Tragically, McGaw’s life was cut short when he passed away from cancer in 1981 at just 30 years of age.
