Bio
Recruited from Claremont, Wil Powell was considered a genuine draft bolter when Gold Coast selected him in the first round of the 2017 National Draft, a decision that initially raised eyebrows given he had not been invited to the National Draft Combine. Arriving at the club with a slight frame, he quickly silenced doubters by establishing himself as a courageous half-back flanker, renowned for his willingness to go back with the flight of the ball and his elite distribution by foot.
Powell's career has been defined by his resilience and loyalty to the Suns during periods of significant list turnover. He overcame a series of gruesome injuries, including a severe ankle dislocation in 2022, to cement his spot as a first-choice defender. Often tasked with playing tall or small due to his intercepting ability and reading of the play, Powell has matured into a composed defensive general, providing vital stability and leadership for the Gold Coast backline.
