Bio
Wilfrid Heron emerged from the affluent Brighton establishment, a Melbourne Grammar alumnus who balanced his football with employment at the pastoral firm Dalgety & Co. Representing University during its final years in the VFL, he endured a quiet, goalless debut season in 1913 before developing into a capable forward option the following year, most notably booting two goals against a formidable Essendon outfit. Heron’s football career was abruptly terminated by the outbreak of World War I, where he served with distinction at Gallipoli, losing his right eye and earning a mention in dispatches for gallantry. After the war, he established himself as a plantation owner in New Guinea, but his life ended in tragedy during the Second World War when he perished aboard the Japanese prisoner transport ship SS Montevideo Maru.
