Bio
A law student from the Gippsland high country, William Houghton made a brief cameo for University during the club’s final VFL campaign. Born in the remote gold rush town of Stirling, he moved to the city to pursue his legal studies and managed just two senior appearances in the 1914 season before the Students withdrew from the competition permanently. His footballing ambitions were ultimately cut short by global events; Houghton enlisted in the AIF in 1915, serving as a Lieutenant in France before returning to Victoria to establish himself as a solicitor rather than returning to the VFL.
