Bio
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 50 in the 2006 National Draft, Will Schofield crossed the Nullarbor to carve out a respectable career as a one-club player for the West Coast Eagles. An athletic key defender with elite closing speed, he was capable of matching up on both tall and small forwards, often tasked with nullifying the opposition's most dangerous attacking threat. While his ability to run and carry from the back half occasionally saw him hit the scoreboard, his primary value lay in his disciplined lockdown work and capacity to peel off and intercept.
Throughout his tenure, Schofield often found himself on the fringe of selection, constantly battling for a spot in a strong defensive unit alongside the likes of Darren Glass, Eric Mackenzie, and Jeremy McGovern. Despite this, he proved to be the ultimate clubman, seizing his opportunities when they arose. His career-defining performance came in the 2018 Grand Final; brought into the side following an injury to Brad Sheppard, Schofield was instrumental in the premiership victory, keeping Collingwood star Jordan De Goey goalless in a high-pressure defensive masterclass. He retired in 2020 as a life member of the club, leaving a legacy as a reliable, team-first defender who delivered when it mattered most.
