Bio
Born in the gold rush town of Walhalla, William "Barlow" Carkeek is celebrated as a dual sportsman who balanced elite football with a Test cricket career. A blacksmith by trade, he established himself as a premier rover with Richmond in the VFA, anchoring their 1902 premiership side before crossing to Essendon to test his skills in the VFL. Renowned for his agility and ability to execute sharp turns in traffic, he was a regular fixture in the Same Olds' lineup for two seasons but returned to the Tigers midway through 1905 to capture a second VFA flag. While his football journey was successful, his sporting legacy was ultimately defined behind the stumps, where he served as Australia’s Test wicketkeeper during the 1912 Triangular Tournament.
