Bio
William Richardson's brief VFL career is a tragic footnote in the early struggles of the St Kilda Football Club. Born in Geelong, he was recruited to a Saints side that was enduring a wretched run of form at the turn of the century, famously finishing last in 1900. Richardson was brought into the senior lineup late in that season, making his debut against his hometown club Geelong at the Junction Oval. He held his spot for three consecutive matches—heavy defeats to Geelong, Collingwood, and Melbourne—but was unable to impact the scoreboard as the team managed just four goals combined across those fixtures. His time at the top level was cut cruelly short not by form, but by illness; he contracted tuberculosis ("consumption") and passed away in 1903 at the age of just 23, one of several players from that era whose lives ended prematurely.
