Family

Arriving at the Giants with a reputation for elite leadership, Xavier O'Halloran was drafted as a natural captain who had led both the Western Jets and Vic Metro. The grandson of 1954 Footscray premiership player Ron McCarthy, he donned his grandfatherโ€™s number 33 jumper but faced a slow start to his AFL life, with early injuries hindering his ability to break into a star-studded midfield. While he often found himself on the fringe of selection during his first few seasons, O'Halloran eventually carved out a niche as a high-impact utility capable of splitting time between the wing, inside midfield, and half-forward. Renowned for his burst of speed and defensive pressure rather than accumulating massive possession numbers, he developed into a selfless role player under Adam Kingsley. Despite persistent trade speculation linking him to a return to Victoria, O'Halloran remained loyal to the Giants, establishing himself as a reliable senior figure and a key connector in the club's forward half.
