Bio
Recruited from Wodonga in the Ovens & Murray Football League, Xavier Tanner was a classy midfielder who became a key figure in North Melbourne's golden era of the late 1970s. A smooth-moving wingman and centreman, he was renowned for his poise, balance, and ability to deliver the ball precisely on either foot. Tanner’s career reached its zenith during the historic 1977 finals campaign; he was instrumental in the club's Premiership victory, with many observers regarding him as the best player afield in the Grand Final Replay against Collingwood, where his run and carry helped dismantle the Magpies.
After playing exactly 100 games for the Kangaroos, Tanner left Arden Street to reunite with his former mentor Ron Barassi at the Melbourne Football Club in 1984. The move was intended to add premiership experience to a developing Demons list, but chronic hamstring injuries and form struggles severely limited his impact, restricting him to just 11 senior appearances over two seasons. Despite a quiet end to his VFL career, Tanner remains a revered figure at North Melbourne as a premiership hero and later contributed significantly to the game as a development coach with the Murray Bushrangers.
