Bio
Hailing from Biloela in Central Queensland, Zac Smith was a significant success story for the AFL's development pathways, transitioning from a junior soccer goalkeeper to a foundation player for the Gold Coast Suns. Recruited via a zone concession, the athletic 206cm ruckman made an immediate impact in the Suns' debut 2011 season, impressing with his mobility and vertical leap. However, his rapid development was halted by a ruptured ACL in 2013, and upon his return, he found it difficult to consistently command the number one ruck spot at Carrara.
Seeking a fresh start to revitalise his career, Smith moved to Geelong during the 2015 trade period. He enjoyed a resurgence in 2016, establishing himself as the Cats' primary ruckman and playing 23 games in a preliminary final side. Despite this strong beginning, he eventually fell out of favour at Kardinia Park as the club experimented with different ruck setups, often leaving him on the fringes of selection. Smith completed a full circle in his football journey by trading back to Gold Coast for the 2020 season, where he served as a veteran mentor and depth player before retiring in 2021.
