Recruited from Portlaoise in County Laois, Zach Tuohy arrived at Carlton as an international rookie and rapidly developed into one of the league's most durable and penetrating defenders. Renowned for his booming right boot and ability to break lines from half-back, he became a staple of the Blues' defence before requesting a trade to Geelong at the end of 2016 in pursuit of finals action. The move proved astute, as Tuohy evolved into a versatile utility at the Cattery, seamlessly shifting between defence, the wing, and the forward line while maintaining an exceptional level of consistency throughout the latter stages of his career.
His legacy as one of the game's greatest international imports was cemented during a stellar tenure with the Cats. In 2022, he became just the second Irishman to win an AFL premiership, playing a crucial role in Geelong's emphatic Grand Final victory over Sydney. The following year, Tuohy surpassed Jim Stynes' long-standing record for the most VFL/AFL games played by an Irish-born player, a testament to his professionalism and longevity. He retired at the conclusion of the 2024 season having played 288 games, leaving the game as the undisputed statistical benchmark for the international recruiting experiment.
