Bio
A prolific ball-winner at state league level, Zac O'Brien earned his shot at the AFL as a mature-age recruit taken by Brisbane in the 2014 Rookie Draft after impressing with the Essendon VFL side. An industrious inside midfielder known for his ability to accumulate possessions in traffic, O'Brien relied on a high work rate and contested ball-winning rather than elite speed or polish. He showed immediate promise by gathering 30 disposals in just his fifth senior game against Carlton, yet he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the side as questions persisted regarding his defensive accountability and kicking efficiency. His two-season tenure at the Lions is frequently remembered for a heated altercation with senior coach Justin Leppitsch during a NEAFL match in 2015, highlighting the friction between his natural accumulation style and the club's structural demands. O'Brien was delisted at the conclusion of that season, returning to state league football where he continued to be a standout performer.
