Bio
Recruited from the Western Jets with pick 12 in the 2018 National Draft, Zak Butters arrived at Alberton alongside Connor Rozee and Xavier Duursma, forming a trio of first-year players who immediately revitalised Port Adelaide's lineup. Initially deployed as a high-pressure small forward, Butters quickly established a reputation for his fearless attack on the ball and creative decision-making. Despite a slight frame that often drew scrutiny regarding his durability, his willingness to back into packs and put his body on the line endeared him to the Power faithful, even as he navigated significant injury setbacks during his developmental years.
As his career progressed, Butters transitioned into a permanent midfield role where he flourished into one of the competition's elite on-ballers. Known for his evasiveness in traffic and damaging disposal inside 50, he became a driving force in the Power's engine room, culminating in a breakout 2023 season that saw him win the John Cahill Medal, earn All-Australian selection, and take out the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award. Now a senior figure and key leader at the club, Butters combines the grit of a contested ball-winner with the polish of a classy outside runner.
