Greater Western Sydney beat Gold Coast 1.3 (9) to 1.2 (8) in torrential rain at Blacktown, the lowest-scoring match in AFL history in either the men's or women's competition.

At Sydney's Association Ground, Carlton footballer George Coulthard gave star batsman Billy Murdoch out in a cricket match, and spectators stormed the pitch while future prime minister Edmund Barton, the other umpire, backed the decision.
The match was between New South Wales and Lord Harris's touring English team.
