Bio
The son of three-time premiership champion Tim Watson, Jobe Watson arrived at Essendon via the father-son rule in the 2002 National Draft carrying immense expectations. His early years were plagued by criticism regarding his aerobic capacity and leg speed, but a significant commitment to conditioning transformed him into one of the competition's premier inside midfielders. A clearance specialist with exceptional vision and clean hands in congestion, Watson became the engine of the Bombers' midfield, renowned for his ability to set up teammates and absorb physical pressure in the contest.
Appointed captain in 2010, Watson won three Crichton Medals and was a consistent All-Australian contender, but his legacy became inextricably linked to the club's supplements saga. He polled the most votes in the 2012 Brownlow Medal count, an honour he later surrendered following the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling that suspended him and 33 teammates for the entire 2016 season. Watson returned for a final campaign in 2017, retiring as a modern club great who led Essendon through its most turbulent era with stoicism and dignity.
