Hawthorn defender Trent Croad announced his retirement after his surgeon warned he might permanently lose all function in his left foot if he broke it again, a year after his 2008 grand final injury.
He had broken the foot in the second quarter of the 2008 grand final, laid a bump on Joel Selwood, and still won a premiership medallion.
