Bio
Recruited from the Western Jets with pick 56 in the 2013 National Draft, James Sicily entered the AFL as a mercurial forward with a reputation for both match-winning talent and a volatile temperament. While he initially showed promise inside 50, notably kicking crucial goals in tight contests, his career trajectory changed drastically when shifted to the backline. He evolved into one of the competition's premier intercept defenders, renowned for his ability to read the flight of the ball, back his judgment in the air, and distribute play with an elite right boot.
Sicily's passion, once seen as a liability, matured into his greatest asset as a leader. After missing the entire 2021 season due to a knee reconstruction, he returned to claim his maiden Peter Crimmins Medal in 2022 and earned his first All-Australian blazer the following year. Appointed captain ahead of the 2023 season, he became the on-field general for a regenerating Hawthorn side, balancing his aggressive defensive instincts with a composed leadership style that has been pivotal to the club's cultural reshaping.
