A small balloon drifted over Windy Hill and dropped little parachutes, and a swarm of schoolboys ran onto the ground to collect them while Essendon and Geelong were still playing.

Order took some time to restore, and Essendon eventually won 14.23 (107) to 11.13 (79).

The WAFL ruled on 7 September 1988 that a VFL match against Melbourne, for which Laurie Keene had travelled as an emergency, counted as a WAFL game for finals eligibility, which caused controversy.
