Bio
Arriving at the Western Bulldogs via the 2015 National Draft after the Sydney Swans declined to match a bid for the son of club legend Andrew Dunkley, Josh Dunkley made an immediate impact at Whitten Oval. He played in the 2016 Premiership victory in his debut season as the youngest player in the side, initially serving as a forward before evolving into a relentless inside midfielder renowned for his elite tackling pressure and aerobic capacity. His tenure at the Bulldogs culminated in a Charles Sutton Medal in 2022, though his time at the club was often punctuated by speculation regarding his specific role within a star-studded engine room, leading to a failed trade request to Essendon in 2020.
Seeking a fresh start and a guaranteed midfield berth, Dunkley moved to the Brisbane Lions ahead of the 2023 season, where his defensive accountability immediately added a harder edge to the Lions' on-ball division. Often tasked with run-with roles on the opposition's prime movers while simultaneously winning his own ball, he became a structural key to Brisbane's tactical setup. His disciplined playstyle proved instrumental in the Lions' return to dominance, helping the club reach the 2023 decider before securing his second premiership medallion in the 2024 Grand Final victory over his father's former side.
