Bio
Drafted as a mature-age recruit from Coburg with pick 66 in the 2016 National Draft, Luke Ryan overcame early rejection to become one of the competition's premier intercept defenders. After being overlooked in previous years, he seized his opportunity at AFL level by showcasing an elite ability to read the play and cut off opposition attacks. His game is built on courageous aerial work and precise distribution by foot, allowing him to act as a quarterback from the back half while frequently playing above his height to quell taller forwards.
Ryan's standing at Fremantle was cemented during the 2020 season when he won the Doig Medal and earned his first All-Australian blazer, stepping up to anchor the backline in the absence of key defensive teammates. He secured a second All-Australian selection in 2024, recognised for his durability and high-production output as a rebounder. As a long-serving leader in defence, Ryan has been pivotal in organising the Dockers' structures behind the ball, providing composure and stability through the club's various competitive phases.
