Matt Rowell

Selected with the first pick in the 2019 National Draft, Matt Rowell arrived at the Gold Coast Suns from the Oakleigh Chargers carrying immense expectations as the standout junior of his class. His transition to senior football was immediate and explosive, polling nine Brownlow votes in his first four matches before a shoulder reconstruction prematurely ended a dazzling debut campaign. While a knee injury the following season further stalled his momentum, Rowell eventually overcame these early durability concerns to establish himself as the engine room of the Suns' midfield alongside fellow high-draft recruit and best mate Noah Anderson.

A throwback footballer known for his tucked-in guernsey and relentless work ethic, Rowell developed into one of the competition's premier contested ball winners and pressure players. His game is built on fierce tackling, clearance dominance, and an ability to extract the ball from heavy traffic, often disregarding his own safety for the contest. Having committed his long-term future to the club, he has evolved into a pivotal leadership figure and a symbol of the Suns' cultural maturity, passing the 100-game milestone as a heart-and-soul inside midfielder.
