Bio
Recruited from local club St Joseph's, Rod Blake developed into a towering figure in the Geelong ruck division throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. Standing 198cm, which was exceptionally tall for the era, he initially served an apprenticeship behind legendary ruckman Sam Newman before establishing himself as the Cats' premier big man. Blake was known for his durability and strong overhead marking, attributes that made him a dangerous option when drifting forward to rest, allowing him to contribute more than 100 goals over his career.
A loyal one-club player, Blake remained a staple of the senior side for 13 seasons, shouldering the ruck load during a transitional period for the club. He was a key component of the Geelong sides that returned to finals competitiveness under coach Billy Goggin in the late 1970s and early 1980s, often battling against the league's toughest ruck opponents. Blake retired at the conclusion of the 1983 season, leaving a legacy as a reliable servant of Kardinia Park and a Geelong Life Member.
