Recruited from Garvoc in the Western District, Les Allen initially faced a difficult path to regular senior football at Carlton, where his opportunities as a key forward were severely limited by the presence of legendary goalkicker Harry "Soapy" Vallence. Seeking a chance to lead an attack, Allen crossed to North Melbourne in 1932, a move that immediately validated his potential and established him as one of the league's most dangerous sharpshooters. A consistent and prolific full-forward with a high conversion rate, he became the focal point of the Shinboners' offence, topping the club's goalkicking list in each of his three seasons at Arden Street. despite his short tenure in the VFL, Allen left a significant mark with an exceptional goals-per-game average before departing to pursue coaching opportunities in country football.
