Bio
Arriving at Princes Park in 1985, Stephen Silvagni carried the weight of one of the club's most famous names as the son of two-time premiership player Sergio Silvagni. Despite the immense pressure inherent in following such a celebrated figure, he quickly established his own identity, debuting as a 17-year-old and cementing a place in the side during a golden era for the Blues. As a one-club player, his durability and consistency allowed him to span generations, playing alongside champion teammates from the mid-80s through to the early 2000s.
While he was capable of playing almost anywhere on the ground, Silvagni is best remembered as the premier full-back of his generation, earning the moniker "SOS" (Son of Serge). Renowned for his close-checking style, distinctively long arms, and an uncanny ability to spoil contest-marking forwards, he famously engaged in career-long duels with legendary goalkickers like Gary Ablett Snr and Jason Dunstall. However, he was far more than a pure stopper; he possessed the athleticism and football intelligence to swing forward with devastating effect, notably booting a bag of eight goals against Fitzroy in 1993 and kicking three vital majors in the 1995 Grand Final triumph over Geelong.
