Bio
Arriving at Melbourne as a mature-age recruit from WAFL club Perth, Alan Johnson brought immediate class and poise to the Demons' midfield in 1982. A silky wingman with elite foot skills and the ability to drift forward to impact the scoreboard, Johnson wasted little time establishing himself, claiming the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal in just his second season. His smooth movement and composed delivery made him a standout in a team that transitioned from strugglers to finals contenders under John Northey, and he played a pivotal role in the club's resurgence during the late 1980s.
Johnson remained a vital component of the Melbourne side that contested the 1988 Grand Final, earning All-Australian selection the following year alongside his second club Best and Fairest award in 1989. Despite starting his VFL career in his mid-20s, his consistent excellence was profound enough to secure him a place on the interchange bench in Melbourne's Team of the Century. He retired in 1990 having firmly established a reputation as one of the most skillful ball-users to don the red and blue.
