Bio
Widely considered the game's first true superstar, Albert Thurgood established a formidable reputation in the VFA and Western Australia before bringing his talents to the newly formed VFL. He returned to Essendon in 1899 after a stint in the Goldfields, immediately asserting himself as the competition's premier forward. Standing as a giant among his contemporaries, Thurgood was renowned for his overhead marking and prodigious kicking power, famously holding the world record for the longest place kick. Despite playing just 46 VFL games, he topped the league goalkicking table in 1900 and 1902 and spearheaded the club's 1901 premiership campaign, securing his status as an inaugural Legend of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
