Bio
James "Jimmy" Thurgood is best remembered as the cousin of club legend Albert Thurgood, but he made his own brief mark during the VFL’s inaugural season. Recruited from the local Essendon District side, he debuted in Round 4, 1897, filling a void in the forward line while his famous relative was playing in the West Australian goldfields. A half-forward who shared the family’s trademark kicking prowess, Thurgood made a spectacular start against Fitzroy, booting two goals—including a massive long-range angled shot that reportedly stunned the crowd at the Brunswick Street Oval. Despite this eye-catching debut, his senior career was surprisingly short-lived, restricted to just three games in the foundation year before he drifted out of the league, leaving the Thurgood legacy to be cemented by Albert's return.
