Bio
Recruited from Gisborne, Alex Gardiner holds a distinct place in history as a member of Footscray's inaugural VFL squad upon the club's admission to the league in 1925. A standard-sized midfielder for the era at 175cm, he operated primarily as a winger, tasked with driving the ball forward as the "Tricolours" adjusted to the superior pace and standard of the competition's top tier. He was a regular fixture during the club's formative VFL years, playing 23 games across two seasons before departing the senior side. While his tenure was brief, Gardiner established a significant family legacy at the Western Oval; his son, Alec Gardiner, would later play 92 games for the club and feature on the wing in the 1961 Grand Final team.
