Family

Recruited from Gisborne, Alex Gardiner arrived at the Western Oval with a strong family connection to the club, following in the footsteps of his father, Alec, who represented Footscray in the 1920s. A pacy and skilled wingman, Gardiner broke into the senior side the year after the club’s 1954 premiership, quickly establishing himself as a regular in the Bulldogs' midfield. He was a key component of the 1961 team that made a fairytale run to the Grand Final, playing on the wing in the eventual loss to Hawthorn. At just 27, he departed the VFL to accept a lucrative offer to captain-coach Box Hill in the VFA, where he cemented a significant post-script to his career; he was later named captain of Box Hill's Team of the Century.
