Bio
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 23 in the 2016 National Draft, Alex Witherden arrived at Brisbane while recovering from a broken leg sustained during his draft year. He wasted little time making an impact, debuting in 2017 and quickly establishing himself as a prolific ball-winner across half-back. Known for his precision kicking and ability to quarterback defensive transitions, he became a staple of the Lions' lineup during their rebuilding phase, earning a Rising Star nomination in his debut season. However, as Brisbane surged into premiership contention in 2020, Witherden fell down the pecking order behind veteran recruit Grant Birchall and the club's emerging defenders, eventually prompting a trade to West Coast in search of regular senior opportunities.
Upon arriving at the Eagles for the 2021 season, Witherden continued to operate as a rebounding defender, often accumulating high disposal numbers even as the team entered a period of significant on-field decline. He provided experience and distribution from the back half during the club's injury-ravaged seasons, often tasked with taking the kick-ins and setting up play. Despite being a consistent contributor during a difficult transition period for West Coast, he was unable to cement a long-term position in the club's rebuilding plans and was delisted at the conclusion of the 2024 season.
