Family

Standing at just 169cm, Alf Dowsing was a diminutive rover and forward who featured sporadically for South Melbourne during the burgeoning years of the VFL. He made his debut in the opening round of the 1900 season but found it difficult to command a permanent place in the Bloods' starting 18, managing just nine senior appearances across three years at the Lake Oval. While his own on-field contribution was fleeting, Dowsing established a significant footballing dynasty as the patriarch of a three-generation VFL family; his son Roy went on to play over 100 games for Melbourne, and his grandson Rob eventually closed the loop by returning the family name to South Melbourne in the late 1960s.
