Bio
Recruited from Pascoe Vale, Andrew Demetriou established himself as a serviceable wingman and half-forward at North Melbourne during the early 1980s. He provided run and carry for the Kangaroos, offering a valuable link option in a team often highlighted by the brilliance of the Krakouer brothers, though he battled inconsistency and injury throughout his tenure at Arden Street. After accumulating over a century of games for North, he sought a fresh start with Hawthorn ahead of the 1988 season to extend his career.
However, breaking into the powerhouse Hawks lineup during their golden era proved difficult, and he managed just three senior appearances over two seasons. While he tasted success in the 1988 reserves premiership, his on-field career concluded shortly after. Although his playing days were those of a reliable journeyman rather than a star, Demetriou's standing in the game was cemented post-retirement, first through his advocacy as head of the AFL Players Association and subsequently during his defining tenure as the AFL Chief Executive Officer.
