Bio
Recruited from Pascoe Vale, Jim Demetriou is best remembered today as the older brother of former AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou, though he was a genuinely talented junior prospect in his own right. A diminutive rover who finished runner-up in the 1973 Morrish Medal and won Essendon's Under-19 Best and Fairest, he broke into the senior side in 1975 but found it difficult to cement a regular spot in the 22. His top-level career was brought to a premature and bizarre end in 1976 when he tripped on a sprinkler head during a match against Fitzroy, resulting in a severe leg break. After leaving Windy Hill, Demetriou spent time with North Melbourne's reserves and VFA club Brunswick before forging a successful post-football career in law and business, eventually founding the charity Sports Without Borders.
