Family

Recruited from the Calder Cannons with pick 47 in the 2001 National Draft, Andrew Welsh carved out a reputation as a hard-at-it utility who could impact the game in multiple roles. While he possessed the dash to play off half-back and the goal sense to drift forward, he became best known for his discipline as a run-with player, frequently tasked with nullifying the competition's most dangerous midfielders. His physical approach and high work rate made him a key structural component at Essendon, allowing him to seamlessly switch between lockdown roles and ball-winning duties in the engine room.

Welsh's standing within the club saw him elevated to the vice-captaincy, and he captained the side on several occasions during Matthew Lloyd's absence. Unfortunately, the latter stages of his career were plagued by injuries, including concussion issues and persistent soft-tissue problems. Although he initially looked to play on into 2012, he was forced to announce his retirement in late 2011, departing as a respected one-club player who provided consistent grunt and leadership during a transitional era for the Bombers.
