Bio
Born in Launceston, Arthur Hinman was a lightly-framed Tasmanian who moved to Victoria to study mining engineering, subsequently joining the University Football Club. Despite his scholarly, bespectacled appearance, he proved a capable footballer, operating primarily as a wingman and rover across two seasons for the Students. He was eventually joined at the club by his younger brother Bill, though Arthur’s career was often interrupted by his academic commitments, including missing matches for geological field trips. He retired from the VFL after the 1911 season to focus on his profession, returning to Tasmania to work at the Mount Bischoff Tin Mine. Tragically, his life was cut short during the First World War; after enlisting and rising to the rank of Lieutenant, he was killed in action at Gallipoli in May 1915.
