Bio
Bill Hinman was a skilled rover and forward who arrived in the VFL with a burgeoning reputation, having already won a club best and fairest award with North Launceston in Tasmania at just 18 years of age. Relocating to Melbourne to study law, he joined the University Football Club, where he played alongside his older brother Arthur during the "Students'" final years in the league. His promising athletic career was abruptly terminated by the outbreak of World War I, which caused the club's dissolution as players enlisted en masse. Hinman forged a distinguished legacy on the Western Front, earning the Military Cross and the Belgian Croix de Guerre for his bravery at Pozières, before returning to Hobart to establish a successful legal career rather than resuming football in Victoria.
