Hailing from the market gardens of Werribee, Aubrey Comben was a diminutive rover and forward pocket who briefly broke into a powerhouse Geelong side during the late 1920s. Recruited from his local district club, the lightweight 173cm playmaker faced the enviable but difficult task of forcing his way into a Cats lineup that had claimed the premiership just the year prior to his 1926 debut. Consequently, he found opportunities limited, managing only sporadic senior appearances across three seasons while sitting on the fringe of a star-studded midfield. While his own VFL career was fleeting, Comben left a lasting legacy as the patriarch of a renowned footballing family; he was the father of Carlton Team of the Century member and club captain Bruce Comben, and his family name remains deeply entrenched in the civic and sporting history of the Werribee region.
