Bio
Recruited from West Newport, John Comben arrived at Princes Park in 1963 to join his older brother Bruce, establishing a family link in the Carlton lineup. A serviceable utility who rotated between ruck-rover and defence, he lacked the imposing physical presence of his sibling but offered versatility and effort in the contest. After four seasons with the Blues where he found it difficult to command a regular senior berth in a strengthening squad, Comben crossed to Melbourne for the 1967 season in search of greater opportunity. However, his stint with the Demons was brief, adding just six games to his career tally before he departed the VFL scene, leaving a legacy as a handy depth player during a transitional era for both clubs.
