Bio
Recruited from Claremont with pick 5 in the 2018 Rookie Draft, Bailey Banfield made an immediate impact at Fremantle by playing every game in his debut season. Initially deployed as a disciplined run-with midfielder, he executed tagging roles on some of the competition's premier on-ballers, earning respect for his work ethic and concentration. However, Banfield faced significant challenges retaining his spot in the midfield rotation over the following years, eventually finding himself on the fringe of the squad. His career reached a crossroads at the end of 2020 when he was delisted, only to be thrown a lifeline when the Dockers re-drafted him as a rookie, challenging him to fight for his AFL survival.
Banfield responded by reinventing himself as a high-pressure defensive forward, displaying remarkable resilience to carve out a new niche in the line-up. During the 2022 season, he became the club's frequent choice as the medical substitute, often impacting games late with his energy and goal sense. His persistence paid off as he eventually shed the "fringe" label to become a regular fixture in the forward line, valued for his defensive accountability, overhead marking ability, and selflessness. This dedication to the team ethos saw him elevated into Fremantle's leadership group, cementing his transformation from a rookie-listed tagger fighting for a contract to a respected senior figure at the club.
