Bio
Recruited from Swan Districts with the number one selection in the 1992 National Draft, Drew Banfield immediately justified the investment by establishing himself as a fixture in the West Coast lineup. A disciplined and tenacious defender who could also rotate through the midfield, he played a crucial role in the Eagles' dominant 1994 premiership side and confirmed his elite standing by winning the Club Champion award in 1996. While his early career was defined by his reliability in the back half, Banfield displayed remarkable resilience later in his tenure by completely reinventing his game to suit the evolving demands of the AFL.
Facing pressure to hold his spot in a burgeoning midfield unit, he transitioned into a sacrificial defensive forward and tagger under John Worsfold. This adaptability extended his career significantly, allowing him to shut down opposition playmakers and apply intense forward pressure. His longevity saw him become the first West Coast player to reach the 250-game milestone, and he retired with the unique distinction of being the only Eagle to play in both the 1994 and 2006 premiership victories.
