Family

Recruited from Warragul, Barry Round began his VFL career at Footscray in 1969, where he initially served as a tall forward and relief ruckman. Despite playing over 100 games for the Bulldogs, his opportunities to dominate in the middle were strictly limited by the presence of legendary teammate Gary Dempsey. Seeking the chance to become a number one ruckman, Round transferred to South Melbourne ahead of the 1976 season, a move that allowed him to escape Dempsey's shadow and ultimately define his own legacy in the game.

At South Melbourne, Round flourished with the increased responsibility, utilising his imposing physical frame and aggression to control stoppages and intimidate opponents. He was a classic old-school ruckman who combined brute strength with significant endurance, often drifting forward to act as a dangerous target near goal, as evidenced by his career tally of 293 majors. His individual peak arrived in 1981 when he tied with Fitzroy's Bernie Quinlan to win the Brownlow Medal, validating his standing as the premier big man of the competition during the early eighties.
